Effects of exercise and nutrition on cardiovascular health

Summary

This research theme seeks to expand on the understanding of the effects of exercise and nutrition on cardiovascular health in healthy and chronic disease patients. We will design and conduct physiological studies to elucidate the potential mechanisms behind the effects of exercise and nutrition on cardiovascular function in different populations. In addition to that, we will perform randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of lifestyle modification on cardiovascular health in clinical populations. Some of the laboratory techniques used in our lab include the in-vivo assessment of endothelial function via the flow-mediated dilation technique, muscle sympathetic activity using the microneurography, evaluation of muscle blood flow during exercise, among others.

These studies will be supported by the Applied Physiology & Nutrition Research Group and will be conducted at the LIM-17, Laboratory of Assessment and Conditioning in Rheumatology (HCFMUSP), School of Physical Education and Sport (EEFEUSP) and the Heart Institute (HCFMUSP).
