Line of research

– Osteoporosis and Osteometabolism in the general population and in rheumatological diseases
– Sarcopenia and Body Composition (elderly and in rheumatological diseases)
– Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain with focus on rheumatological diseases

Summary

Bone Metabolism Laboratory of the Rheumatology Division is dedicated to the clinical and experimental study of bone metabolism and osteoporosis, focusing on epidemiology of osteoporosis and evaluation of bone health and body composition/sarcopenia in patients with rheumatological diseases and also in the general population. The lab is equipped with different devices, including densitometry with Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA), measurement of visceral fat and Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) softwares. In addition, we have two multi-user equipment (Peripheral high-resolution computed tomography [HR-pQCT] and high-resolution video system [Osteomeasure]) used in the study of bone microarchitecture and quantitative analysis of bone fragments (histomorphometry) obtained by biopsy, respectively. We have clinical studies in patients from the entire hospital complex (Hospital das Clínicas), epidemiological studies (more than 10-year follow-up) of a Brazilian community-dwelling elderly (Sao Paulo Ageing & Health – SPAH) and molecular analyzes of gene expression and polymorphisms genetics in osteoporosis.
