Line of research:

Knee surgery, especially patellar instability, encompassing from basic science to surgical treatment.

Summary

Patellar instability of the knee has a broad spectrum of clinical presentations, from acute traumatic dislocations in patients with normal anatomy to recurrent/habitual/inveterate atraumatic dislocations in patients with important patellofemoral dysplasia. As it is not as common as other knee pathologies (such as anterior cruciate ligament injury and osteoarthritis, for example), there is a relatively small volume of publications, allowing a wide-open field for studies and innovations. For example, in the last 20 years the medial patellofemoral ligament has become standard in surgery to treat patellar instability, despite being “rediscovered” only at the beginning of the 1990s. The IOT-HCFMUSP has a broad history of publications in this area. This line of research seeks to study anatomy, risk factors, epidemiology, clinical presentations and results of classical and innovative surgeries to advance knowledge about the patellar instability.
